Kaveh

Kaveh the blacksmith (Ahangar) is a mythical character in Iranian mythology who leads a popular uprising against a ruthless foreign ruler Zahhak. His history is narrated in the epic of Shahnameh the national epic of Iran by the 10th century poet Ferdowsi Tusi. Based on Avestan tradition, Zahhak was from Babylonia and more or less a demon not human. Kaveh is the most famous of Persian mythological characters in resistance against despotic foreign rule in Iran. He rebelled against the foreign ruler of Iran and lead the people to overthrow him. As a symbol of resistance #### and unity, Kaveh raised his leather apron on a spear, known as “Derafsh-e Kaviani”. This flag was later decorated with precious jewels and became the symbol of Iranian independence, resistance and resilience as well as the revolutionary symbol of the masses in their fight against foreign invaders.
